Homeschool families can enjoy free hands-on music activities, an Instrument Petting Zoo, crafts and live performances at The Pavilion on September 15.

Children can explore instruments up close through hands-on musical experiences.

Explore the Instrument Petting Zoo

One of the event’s featured experiences will be the interactive Instrument Petting Zoo, powered by Ovintiv.

Instead of only seeing instruments in a picture or listening to them from a distance, children will have the opportunity to explore instruments up close and discover more about how they work. This hands-on format can help make musical concepts feel more approachable, especially for children who are curious about music but have not yet had the opportunity to try an instrument.

Young visitors can observe the different shapes, sizes and parts of instruments while learning how musicians use them to create sound. The experience may even help children discover an instrument they would like to learn more about.

Create, Listen and Learn

The Instrument Petting Zoo is only one part of the day. Music Explorers will also include:

  • Music-inspired arts and crafts
  • Live musical performances
  • Interactive opportunities for children
  • Creative learning through exploration
  • A welcoming environment for homeschool families

The combination of music, art and hands-on activities makes the event a natural fit for families looking to incorporate the fine arts into their homeschool schedule.

Children can move between activities, listen to live music and engage with the experience in the way that best suits their interests. Because the event is come-and-go, families do not have to commit to being there for the entire four-hour window.

Music Explorers gives children an approachable introduction to different musical instruments.

A Free Enrichment Opportunity for Homeschool Families

Music can open the door to conversations about science, history, culture, mathematics, movement and creative expression. An event like Music Explorers gives families an opportunity to introduce those ideas through experiences rather than worksheets.

Parents may want to continue the learning at home by asking children:

Keep Exploring at Home

  • Which instrument was your favorite?
  • How did the instruments create different sounds?
  • Which instrument would you like to learn to play?
  • How did the live music make you feel?
  • Can you design or create an instrument at home?

Families could also bring a notebook or sketchbook so children can draw their favorite instrument or write about something new they discovered.
