About National Waffle Day
When Is National Waffle Day?
National Waffle Day is always observed on August 24. In 2026, it falls on Monday, August 24.
The date commemorates August 24, 1869, when Cornelius Swartwout of Troy, New York, received a U.S. patent for an improved stovetop waffle iron. His design made the iron easier to turn and safer to open without burning the cook’s hands.
Where Did Waffles Come From?
Ancient Greeks cooked flat cakes known as obleios between heated metal plates. These early cakes did not have the deep grid pattern associated with modern waffles and were often eaten with savory ingredients such as herbs and cheese.
During the Middle Ages, European cooks continued using hinged iron plates over open fires. By around the 1200s and 1300s, bakers were producing cakes with recognizable honeycomb-style patterns. One of the earliest known written waffle recipes appeared in the late-14th-century French household guide Le Ménagier de Paris.
How Waffles Became an American Favorite
Waffle traditions traveled from Europe to America with settlers, particularly those with Dutch culinary influences. Swartwout’s 1869 design made waffle irons more convenient, while electric waffle irons and frozen waffles eventually brought the breakfast favorite to even more homes.
Belgian waffles gained widespread American attention at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, where their deep pockets, light texture, strawberries and whipped cream became a hit. Today, waffles appear in breakfast plates, chicken-and-waffle dishes, sandwiches, desserts and savory meals.
A Record-Breaking Waffle
According to Guinness World Records, the world’s largest waffle was created in Gouda, Netherlands, on June 29, 2013.
Made by Stichting Gouda Oogst, it weighed 110 pounds and 3.68 ounces and measured more than 8 feet in diameter. It required approximately 132 pounds of dough, 33 pounds of syrup and a waffle iron weighing more than 6,600 pounds.
After Gouda’s mayor took the first bite, the creation was divided into approximately 3,000 servings. See the Guinness World Record →
